In Search of ‘Our Waddi Tree’ – ‘The Pubs’

It’s thirsty business in the outback. From the cattle barons to the cleaners to the travellers, they all love their little oasis they call ‘The Pub’. Where you will find proud displays of historical imagery, artefacts, memorabilia and the quirky dusty paraphernalia. The country and outback pubs of Australia are a lot more than just a watering hole; They’re an integral part of the community’s culture and social fabric. A meeting place where thirsts are not only quenched but news is discussed, business is accomplished, charities supported, a bit of gossip caught up on and you can devour a tasty hearty counter meal to boot. A place enjoyed by all a place to let your hair down a on Friday night after a hard week work.

For the traveller the pub is of upmost importance. It’s here you meet the locals and get to know the real community you are visiting. It’s also a great spot to gather the local knowledge you need for the next leg of your journey. Find out the ‘real’ road conditions from those who have just travelled them and those that use them every day. Collect priceless intel on the best fishing holes, if you’re lucky and campsites as well as the must-see attractions in an area. From experience, I can guarantee you won’t find the truly special hidden gems in the glossy tourist brochures.

If they have room many pubs are now graciously offering a great place to camp on site, the general rule STAY FOR FREE on the condition you partake in a meal or a few drinks in their establishment. This gives you the opportunity to have good clean up, relax, have a great feed and not worry about the booze bus. We dropped into a number of outback pubs while in search of ‘Our Waddi Tree’ and we ‘Pub Camped’ at the Marree Hotel, The Transcontinental in Oodnadatta and the Shakespeare (Shakey) in Barcaldine.

To my mind the local pub is a must do for any traveller who really wants a small taste of outback life and culture. This video gives you a glimpse into some of the Iconic Aussie Pubs we found on journey though the Hat Towns.
