1960s Big lap- The 'Rock' after the wet

16,618 miles in an unbreakable 1962 EK Holden towing a 15' Viscount Van with Mum, Dad and three little ones on board. The trip was hampered by cyclones, extreme heat (no aircon in those days!) major floods and plenty of bull dust.

A trip to ‘The Rock’ in the 1960s was a very different proposition to what it is these days. A true adventure, rough roads with corrugations, bull dust and muddy bogs. After 3 months on the road with only a fleeting glimpse of bitumen we arrived at Ayers Rock ‘Uluru’ along with the rains and the breaking of the big drought.

The grass had grown and there were waterfalls, springs and rock pools on and around ‘The Rock’. A truly spectacular sight. Here is ‘The Rock’ from a different perspective.
